This session, we will be studying and taking inspiration from the U.S. based "Type Hike". To quote their website, "Type Hike is a collaborative non-profit design project that celebrates and supports the outdoors through typography. It was created by David Rygiol and James Walker. The project was born from the belief that all designers are obligated to use their talent and ability to make the world a more beautiful place."
The project began in 2016 with a series of 60 designs celebrating the National Park Service centennial anniversary in August. This series has been exhibited in galleries across the country and added to the permanent collection of the Library of Congress. 100% of the profits from their shop have been donated to help protect and preserve the outdoors.
Why Type Hike?
The very essence of the Type Hike style and approach combined with the essence of the outdoors and sense of adventure aligns perfectly with a study abroad project. It allows students tons of creative freedom, while discovering their surroundings through type, texture, colors, and patterns. Oftentimes, students who study graphic design are tasked to respond to client and creative briefs and they are challenged to be output and product driven while sometimes making personal aesthetic sacrifices. This particular creative prompt allows them to have a playground and wonderland of creative possibilities while studying the UK through a critical and creative lense.
