Shelby's Second Week in London

Monday, July 25

On Monday we switched hotels. This one is right next door to the Tate Modern, which is so exciting! I was able to have afternoon tea and then went to the Natural History Museum here in London! It was one of the coolest museums we have been to by far! I got to see Dippy the dinosaur and some really cool rocks! I could not imagine having to clean all those little birds! There had to be over 1,000 small birds in one case (see above).

I also sent out some postcards internationally for the first time, so if I have asked for your address in the past couple of weeks, you should check your mail.

Tuesday, July 26

We did a tour of Pentagram, a design firm, here in London. It was really interesting to see all that they had worked on and their creative process.

Wednesday, July 27

Wednesday was a work day. Our hotel is actually a dorm and has the basement set up as a bar, which is currently not open, but they have a lot of couches and tables. It was nice to spend the day working on homework down there. It made me feel like a student here in London, not just a student studying in London. I of course got Pret for lunch. I am currently living on Pret, a little sandwich shop that has a location on every street corner that is pretty inexpensive. Later that night a group of us went to the Prince of Wales Theatre to see the Book of Mormon. It was really funny, and I'm glad to have finally seen it.

Thursday, July 28

I went to the Tate Modern next door! Unfortunately, the Infinity Mirrors were booked until September, I did however get to place stickers around Yayoi's Room and that was a fun experience!

After the Tate, we went as a group to BrandOpus, another design firm here in London. Their vibe was so chill and fun it made me want to work for them! They showed us how they rebranded Oscar Mayer and that was really interesting. Later that night we went on a Ghost Bus Tour around London and it was a good time. The tour guide was goofy. When we were walking back to the hotel, we noticed someone had spray-painted "pay artists" under the Tate Modern's sign.

Friday, July 29

Friday we went to the Tate Britain. I loved this museum! I even did some sketching of a Turner painting while I was there! I have seen Turner's work before, but it never ceases to amaze me when I see them in person. There was also a room filled with Rothko's and a really interesting commissioned exhibit of what looked to be a parade of people. It was so large scale, the few pictures I do have shown of that display do not do it justice.

Saturday, July 30

We had class for most of the day. Then a small group of us went out to shop and eat dinner. Unfortunately, a lot of the shops were closed, but we did eat a really yummy dinner at this place called Patty & Bun on Portobello Road. I had a chicken sandwich that was absolutely delicious.

Sunday, July 31

A very busy day! We went to the Victoria and Albert Museum first. I saw so many amazing pieces of artwork, and the setup of the museum is slightly overwhelming. They fill their spaces as much as possible and I didn't know where to look first. Their garden was so peaceful though, and I could honestly spend all day there.

The Science Museum in London was super neat. I really liked their exhibit on medicine and astronomy! I wish I had more time here, but because I had already spent a good portion of the time at the V&A and had to catch a train later that day, I didn't get to spend as much time as I would have liked.

After the museums, I rounded out my weekend by hopping on a four-hour train ride to Edinburg. Our train had a slight delay, however we arrived safely that night. I plan on staying a few days here in Edinburg. I can't wait to share my three-day trip in the next weekly recap!
