Shelby's Weekly Recap

We got stuck in Scotland, but it's better than being in Indiana.

Monday, August 1, 2022

Waking up in Scotland was magical, though we did find out a few days after we arrived in Edinburgh we were staying next door to one of the most haunted graveyards in the world. However, waking up to this view from my bedroom window on our first full day was incredible.

We all slept in on Monday. So when we left the Airbnb, we left around lunchtime. We went to a little thrift store, and because it was so cold, I bought a sweater. I have been so used to hot London weather, not cold Scotland weather, so I needed something warmer to wear. We stopped at a little restaurant called Mum's Great Comfort Food for lunch. I had a vegetarian Wellington that had mushrooms, spinach, and cheese in it. It was super yummy. Their ketchup bottles were really cute too, they were tomato-shaped. After lunch, we went to Sansbury to get some groceries, because we made plans to cook dinner instead of eating out, to save money. We walked around the Royal Mile for a bit and bought souvenirs.

Natalie, Shelby, Abby, and I went to Grayfriaer Bobby's for Lunch. I had a Mash and it was really good. I booped the statue of Bobby the dog on the nose, and we took a bus tour of the city! and went to the Royal Gardens (see below), I could spend days walking around there. They were beautiful. I also bought a bottle of Whiskey for my dad. We cooked dinner in the airbnb that night and got Gelato afterwards.

Natalie and I started our day at the National Museum of Scotland because we wanted to see Dolly the Sheep, the sheep that was successfully cloned in the late 90's, and the typewriter exhibit. It was a super interesting museum.

After the museum, I went to Edinbrugh Castle, and that was beautiful! What a great view! Unfortunatly my eyes were closed in the only picture I took of me there.

After the castle I got a drink in a cafe and then headed to the train station to catch my train back to London. Once I got there though, my train had been cancelled, and so had all outbound trains to London. We were stuck in Scotland. We all went into panic, until Sydney had the idea to call the airbnb owner to see if we could get another night. Luckily, the owner helped us out and we were able to stay another night!

Once we had our sleeping arrangements made, and our trains booked for the next day, we made the most of being in Scotland for an extra night. Because who wouldn't be hyped on be in scotland an extra day! We got pizza from the Civerinos, a place we wanted to try - but did not have the time too, and we got gelato again.

Thurday, August 4, 2022

At 5:30 am, we boarded our train back to London. Thankfully. I love Scotland, but I needed to get back to London. After 5 hours we arrived in London. I ate on the train, but I got Prit for Brunch, and then I took a nap until class time at four.

Because of our train mishap the day before, our department head bought us all pizza. It was so sweet of her. Thank you Kristina.

We had class most of the day. During lunch I went to primark to get a new carryon luggage. and then for dinner Jerry took us to get street food. I had a korean bowl and a white and milk chocolate covered strawberry and banana kabob.

Free day adventures below.

I started out the day at the London Eye, we almost weren't able to get tickets, however we showed up early, and sure enough they had enough tickets for a group of us to all go! It was a great experience! When I had went to London in 2015 we didn't have time to go to the Eye, so I am glad we got to go this time around!

Sydney and I headed to Greenwich to the Prime Meridian! In 2016, I went to Ecuador and got to stand on the Equator (zero of Latitude), and today I stood on the Prime Meridian (Zero of Longitude). We also went through the Royal Obseratory Museum. It was really interesting.

On our way back, we stopped at the Wellcome Collection. They had so many interesting things to see and I really enjoyed reading all their labels about the updates and changes the museum was making.

To end the night, a group of us met up for dinner and then ate gelato to celebrate our last night in London.

We loaded up all our things and headed to the airport to travel back to the US. On our way to the airport we saw Tower Bridge up, meaning someone in the Royal Family was under it on the Thames!! I'm sad I'm not in London anymore, but hopeful I'll be back again soon.
